Is Your Front Door Secure Enough?

Updated: Aug 6

Your front door is your home’s first line of defense. Whether you're upgrading old hardware or installing a smart lock, even small changes can make a big difference to your security.

1. Start with a Strong Door

If your front door is damaged, warped, or cracking, it may be time for a replacement. A weak door can undermine even the best lock. Make sure it closes cleanly and sits flush in the frame — this ensures your lock aligns correctly and the door can’t be easily forced open.

Live near the coast? Salt air can accelerate rust on hinges and other metal components. Check regularly for corrosion and replace worn parts early.

2. Upgrade to a Smart Lock

If you haven’t changed your locks recently — or if you're still using physical keys — consider switching to a McGrath smart lock. Our smart locks use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and integrate with the McGrath Locks App, giving you:

  • PIN code, fob, or mobile app access

  • Auto-locking features so your door is never left unlocked

  • Access logs so you know exactly who’s coming and going

3. Add a Strike Plate

Installing a strike plate reinforces the lock's contact point with the door frame — a key area targeted during forced break-ins. Use longer screws (at least 75mm) to anchor it securely into the framing timber behind the door jamb. For the best results, consult a qualified locksmith or installer.

4. Install a Smart Doorbell (and Peephole)

A smart doorbell lets you see who’s at your front door in real time — from anywhere. While McGrath Locks doesn’t currently stock these, many customers pair smart doorbells with their smart locks for extra visibility.

As a backup, a classic peephole viewer is still a great addition. It doesn’t rely on batteries or Wi-Fi and gives you a quick visual check before opening the door.

5. Install a Security Screen Door

Adding a security screen door creates another barrier between your home and the outside world — ideal for ventilation without compromising safety. A well-built screen door deters opportunistic break-ins and gives you extra peace of mind when answering the door.

For maximum protection, fit your screen with the Ultra-Secua Smart Lock, available from McGrath. It’s designed specifically for hinged and sliding screen doors

Why Front Door Security Matters

Most burglars still enter through the front door — often in broad daylight. Reinforcing your entry with a strong door, a smart lock, and simple hardware upgrades significantly lowers your risk.
